How long should you rest between sets?

By Yannik MuthReviewed on 2 min read

In short

For muscle growth, 90 seconds to 2 minutes is usually enough; above 90 seconds, a review found no visible difference [1]. For heavy compound lifts and maximal strength, rest periods over 2 minutes help [2, 3].

What do the studies show?

A review of 9 studies found a small edge for rest periods over 60 seconds; from 90 seconds on, no difference was visible [1]. Trained men built more strength and muscle thickness with 3 minutes of rest than with one [2].

For maximal strength, a review of 23 studies advises trained lifters to rest more than 2 minutes [3].

Why do compound lifts need longer rest?

Squats or bench presses work many muscles at once. With too little rest, you get fewer reps in the next set. Small exercises like lateral raises recover faster.

How long does Tarvo rest?

Tarvo plans rest by exercise type:

ExerciseMuscle buildingStrength
Compound2:303:00
Medium2:002:00
Isolation1:301:30

The timer starts as soon as you check off a set, on your iPhone, your Lock Screen and your Apple Watch. Adjust it with −15 s and +15 s, or skip it.

Questions

Is 60 seconds of rest too short?

For muscle growth, probably yes. The review found a small edge above 60 seconds [1], and 1 minute built less than 3 minutes [2].

How long should I rest for strength?

More than 2 minutes [3]. With a strength goal, Tarvo plans 3:00 min for compound lifts.

Are short rests better because of the burn?

No. Short rests didn’t build more muscle in the studies, if anything slightly less [1, 2].

Can I rest longer than planned?

Yes. Above 90 seconds, a longer rest doesn’t visibly hurt growth [1]; it just takes time.

How does Tarvo warm you up?

Before the first compound lift for a muscle, Tarvo adds two warm-up sets: 50 percent of your working weight × 8 and 80 percent × 3, each followed by a minute of rest. In a small study, one heavy warm-up set led to more reps afterwards than light ones [4]; the number of sets and the minute are Tarvo’s choice.

The rest timer runs on its own.

Check off a set and Tarvo times the rest that fits the exercise. On your wrist too.
